The Milky Way Tech Hub and Wisconsin Voices Presents Wisconsin Tech Month
To raise awareness of the critical importance of Information Technology in Wisconsin’s economy, the Milky Way Tech Hub, Wisconsin Voices, and other supporting organizations are presenting WI Tech Month in October 2021.
The tech sector accounts for about 7% of Wisconsin’s total economy. Technology continues to power job growth and economic gains in the state of Wisconsin while delivering transformative ways in how we work, create, and communicate.
To raise awareness of the critical importance of Information Technology in Wisconsin’s economy, the Milky Way Tech Hub, Wisconsin Voices, and other supporting organizations are presenting WI Tech Month in October 2021.
During the month of October, there will be a host of events throughout the state hosted by various groups and organizations such as UW-Parkside. Milky Way Tech Hub will partner with UW-P to host a design thinking workshop on developing community-based ecosystems through a Smart Cities approach with a focus on DEI. George Vukotich, Founding Director of UW-Parkside’s Innovation and Smart Cities Center stated “Not only are universities ideal for bringing together diverse groups but UW-Parkside being an urban-type campus and the most diverse of the 13 schools in the UW System provides a unique opportunity to bring; students, faculty, and the community together to create the future.”
The month will kick off with Milwaukee Tech Advocacy Week (October 1st-8th). This will be a week of civic tech events that aim to equip the general public with the tools and knowledge necessary to find their voices in technology through advocacy, policy, and legislation. The week’s events will lead up to lobby day on October 8th.
“There is a severe gap in representation and resources for Black entrepreneurs and workers in the tech industry. Wisconsin Voices is excited to support the Milky Way Tech Hub as a community-led effort to close this gap and enlist the creativity and talent of Black Milwaukeeans to make our city and state a national leader in IT innovation” says Tim Schindler, Co-Executive Director of Wisconsin Voices.
Events and programs throughout the month will touch on topics that range from smart cities solutions to workforce development and much more all with the goal to unify Wisconsin’s tech ecosystem.
Techquity, an initiative of United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County, is also working in partnership with Milky Way Tech Hub to amplify a collective policy agenda that focuses on Broadband, Upskilling, and resource allocation for entrepreneurs.
David Berka of Techquity shared “Metro Milwaukee and Wisconsin as a whole need a collaborative tech sector so that we can identify gaps in digital equity, inclusion, and opportunity for members of our community.”
Other confirmed participating cities included Madison, Racine, Kenosha, Beloit, and Green Bay.
A list of events will be shared in the upcoming weeks. To participate in the month of events sign up here: https://milkywaytechhub.
