Supervisor Taylor Calls for Reentry Initiative at the House of Correction

MILWAUKEE – County Supervisor Sequanna Taylor will present a resolution calling for a reentry initiative to help support individuals returning to the community from the Milwaukee County House of Correction (HOC) at the Wednesday, September 15 Health Equity, Human Needs, and Strategic Planning Committee meeting.

“Reentering the community is incredibly difficult for individuals who do not have access to necessary support both while incarcerated and as they transition back into life outside of a correctional facility,” said Supervisor Taylor. “There is so much more that we can do to prepare people to successfully come home and make sure that they stay home.”

The resolution requests that the HOC work with the Milwaukee County Department of Health and Human Services, Behavioral Health Division, and Office of the Sheriff to develop the initiative. The initiative would assist people during and post-incarceration to navigate housing resources, economic resources, mental health services, and trusted community members to prepare them to successfully reenter the community, maintain productivity, and become less likely to reoffend.

Supervisor Taylor’s reentry initiative would utilize trusted community members that relate to incarcerated people and have them take on a role guiding those individuals toward making positive decisions and avoiding recidivism.

The HOC is a low security detention facility operated by Milwaukee County which houses people serving sentences of 12 months or less.

Love the idea, though Milwaukee county is stretched pretty thin. I think “wrap-around services” hardly exist.
