Supervisor Martinez Decries House Resolution Condemning “Horrors of Socialism”

MILWAUKEE – On Wednesday, February 1, 2023, the Republican-led House of Representatives passed a resolution denouncing the “horrors of socialism” in a 328-86 vote. Supervisor Juan Miguel-Martinez made the following statement:

“I am beyond saddened by the actions of the US House of Representatives this week. This nation has moved far past the “Red Scare” of the 1940’s and 50’s; and Socialists, like me, will not be bullied or intimidated by the national government. Milwaukee has a long-standing tradition of Socialism that didn’t bring “horrors”. Instead, it resulted in additional parkland and the implementation of a sewer system that we all rely on,” said Supervisor Martinez. “My seat on the Milwaukee County Board is nonpartisan, and as such, I fight to improve the quality of life for absolutely everyone, whether we agree politically or not. I can confidently say that I’ll continue to fight for ‘horrors’ such as proper funding for education, taking care of the deferred maintenance in our parks, fair housing practices, union jobs, paid parental leave, Right to Counsel, and funding the Mitchell Park Domes. I am honored to do so.”

The measure was led by Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise

House Democrats joined House Republicans in a 328-86 vote to pass the measure. Additionally, 14 members chose to abstain by voting “present”.

Supervisor Juan Miguel Martinez was elected to the Milwaukee County Board in 2022. He is one of two self-described Socialists currently serving on the Board.

Supervisor Martinez reflects a view of socialism that built the best aspects of the city we rightly celebrate. So why is it that the GOP’s corporate pawns continue their never ending assault on a political philosophy that has demonstrated an ability to
improve the quality of life for so many?

Imagine the state of life in our country absent the”horrors” of Social Security, national health care and the programs that feed those in need. Then imagine a government absent the impacts of corporate lobbyists, billionaire Republican “donors”, curiously intolerant religious bigots and privatizers bent on profiting from any and all “public” services.

Perhaps it is the the horrors promoted by the ruthless aspects of capitalism the need to be examined and denounced, rather than a philosophy that favors people over profits.

We need more elected representatives who share the depth of concern for our community the Supervisor’s Martinez expresses.

Give thanks to the 2 WI Democrats who voted against this resolution, Gwen Moore and Mark Pocan. But 109 loser Democrats voted “yea” with the Republicans. Can’t even stand up against the GOP on this largely symbolic vote! Afraid the GOP will call you names later? The Democratic party might think to change it’s name soon, maybe the Weak Tea Party? (A variation of the “Tea Party”).
