Supervisor Clancy Lauds Board’s Decision: Committee of the Whole to Take up Sheriff’s Report
Yesterday, the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors voted [14-2] to forward a self-generated report on the conditions, policies, and budget of the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office to the Committee of the Whole. This decision enables the general public to provide testimony on the contents of the report. Supervisor Ryan Clancy made the following statement:
“Despite the repeated attacks on my character and office, sidestepping the grave issues surrounding the Sheriff’s Office, I am deeply appreciative of the decision to overturn the Audit Committee’s earlier choice to merely file this report without permitting public input. The voices of the public, especially those who have suffered the loss of loved ones while in custody, have resonated with profound concerns and queries,” said Supervisor Clancy. “I remain hopeful for a transparent public hearing, one that prioritizes ethical standards over superficial ‘decorum’. After witnessing years of distressing conditions, public protests, and the troubling deaths of six individuals in custody over 14 months, the public deserves action, not excuses.”
The release of the report comes after Sheriff’s Office staff employed physical force on 27 occupants who protested conditions in the jail in August, and after six individuals died in custody in a 14-month span.
The report is expected to be taken up by the Committee of the Whole on September 28, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. in Room 200.
