State of Wisconsin Moves to Kill SDC

Milwaukee, WI – March 22, 2025

We believe that our government has a moral obligation to address poverty in our community. Since 1963, the Social Development Commission has been doing that for the City and County of Milwaukee. SDC has saved thousands from eviction with rental assistance. Since 2001, SDC has SDC has prepared more than 242,055 federal and state tax returns, securing over $237 million in tax credits for households that need it the most and were at risk of losing tax benefits with free tax preparation and filing services. SDC has helped thousands heat their homes and keep the lights on. SDC provided 2 million free meals to school aged children and children in childcare centers. SDC has studied the root causes of poverty and proposed evidence-based solutions to policymakers. And so much more.

SDC’s status as a Community Action Agency is critical to the work that needs to be done. On Friday, SDC learned that the Department of Children and Families (DCF) decided to issue a notice of intent to de-designate SDC as a Community Action Agency. DCF made that decision without giving SDC a fair opportunity to address their concerns. We want you to know that a public hearing will be held on April 4 at 11:30am at the State Office Building-819 N 6th St, Milwaukee WI 53203. We want you to know that your voice is critical to determining whether our government fulfills its moral obligation to address poverty in our community.
