Special Partisan Primary is Tuesday, July 2

MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee voters living State Senate District 4 will be voting for a new State Senator in a Special Partisan Primary Election tomorrow.  The winner of Tuesday’s Special Partisan Primary will be on the ballot for the July 30 special election for State Senate District 4.  The special election will fill the currently vacant seat for the remainder of the current term, which concludes at the end of this year.

Voters who live in the 4th State Senate District and who requested mail-in ballots will have received two ballots for two different elections within a few weeks of each other due to the timing of the special election. Those two ballots, for two different terms of office, will have the same candidates for State Senate District 4 due to the overlapping mail-in voting periods of the Special election and the August Partisan Primary election.

The Milwaukee Election Commission has noted the differences in the ballots by using bright green mailing labels for the July 2 Special Primary Election, and the July 30 Special Election for State Senate District 4.

Voters who live in State Senate District 4 with mail-In ballots can still complete and return the ballot for Tuesday’s Special Primary Election to the Milwaukee Election Commission on:

Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at our
Election Operations Center
1901 South Kinnickinnic Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53207
7:00am to 8:00pm

Mail-in ballots for the August Partisan Primary (no bright green mailing label) can still be sent in the mail and will arrive in time for that election. The Milwaukee Election Commission is prepared to handle both elections and ensure that mail-in ballots for both elections are counted on their respective election days.

Federal law requires that election officials send out ballots for federal elections 47 days before an election. This explains why voters with mail-in ballots already received their ballots for the August 13th Partisan Primary as the law requires, including voters in State Senate District 4.

The August 13 Partisan Primary ballot includes the same candidates for State Senate District 4. The candidate that prevails in the August Partisan Primary will be on the ballot for the General Election on November 5, 2024. The candidate that prevails on November 5 will fill the seat in the upcoming regular term, when the Wisconsin Legislature begins its next term in January 2025.

“If any voter has a question about their ballot, we encourage them to give us a call at 414-286-vote, or 414-286-8683,” said Milwaukee Elections Commission Executive Director Paulina Gutiérrez. “We are happy to assist voters understand their ballots and explain how their ballot is received and counted!”

If a voter is not sure if they live in State Senate District 4, they can visit the My Vote website, at www.myvotewi.gov, and look under “Where do I vote” to find out what district they live in. To view a sample ballot for that election, voter can enter their appropriate residential voting address.
