The Lynden Sculpture Garden is located at 2145 West Brown Deer Road. Admission is free. All events listed below are free unless otherwise indicated. Memberships, which offer significant discounts on workshops and other events, are available.

The Lynden Sculpture Garden is open daily from 10 am-5 pm (closed Thursdays). Thanks to the generosity of our donors, admission is free at this time. ENEIDA SANCHES: MATERIAL TRANCE

Eneida Sanches (b. Salvador, Bahia, 1962) is a metalsmith, printmaker, sculptor, and installation artist. She has been exploring the idea of trance as a religious phenomenon and the collective social representation of Afro-Bahian culture and its histories for more than twenty years. Trance, according to Dr. Rachel Elizabeth Harding, “is an elemental experience in many African and Afro-Atlantic religions, and ultimately, it is a poetic-artistic means of communication between different planes of experience.” For Sanches, the body is the locus of trance, making it a material practice—a state of immanence rather than transcendence. Material Trance brings together a selection of the artist’s prints, plates, sculptures, and installations.

Since 2015, Call & Response–a cumulative, cross-disciplinary, community-focused, artist-driven initiative–has brought together artists, scholars, educators, and community members to construct a space for artists of color to celebrate the radical Black imagination as a means to re-examine the past and imagine a better future. This year, we offer in-person residencies and public programs with artists Eneida Sanches, Daniel Minter, Arianne King Comer, Reggie Wilson, Portia Cobb, and LaNia Sproles.

We begin our World Refugee Day celebration on June 20 at Milwaukee City Hall. The HOME Refugee Steering Committee at the Lynden Sculpture Garden then invites you to observe World Refugee Day in a series of outdoor events and programs at Lynden that celebrate Milwaukee’s refugee communities through art, food, fashion, and performance: World Refugee Day (June 25), Music and Dance Day (July 15), Craft Market and Fashion Day (August 19), and a final Craft Day on September 16.

Close out your summer with self-compassion by dropping into Dear Self with Love, artist-in-residence Jenna Knapp’s future-letter writing workshop. She invites you to write a letter to your future (summer 2024) self. Walk the labyrinth to reflect on this past summer, soak up the present moment before the next season, and cast into the future to explore what you’d like to create in your life between now and summer 2024. After writing your letter, you can sign, seal, and address it to yourself before depositing it into the handmade mailbox. You will receive your letter back at the beginning of next summer, June 2024. Set your intentions for the school year ahead, tell yourself a story from this summer, give future you a pep-talk or anything you need to process the transition of this season and the next and the next.

Join artist-in-residence and birder Chuck Stebelton the second Sunday of each month for a small-group, socially distanced bird walk on the grounds. Keeping to the perimeter of the garden, we’ll watch for seasonal migrants and resident bird species and seek out the best bird habitats to identify as many species as we can. Please dress for the weather and plan to walk in varied terrain. Bring your binoculars if you have them; no previous birding experience required.

This year September Craft Market will feature crafts and other goods from Africa, Asia, and Indigenous makers. Bring a picnic and a blanket to enjoy the outdoors with friends, family, and community, or purchase food and refreshments prepared by community chefs from the Afghan community. There will be a Multilingual Story Time, hands-on artmaking, and the land team will lead a walk introducing Lynden’s trees. Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield will provide community resources, PHE unwinding materials, and health and wellness educational information.

Flax is a plant harvested for seed, oil, paper, and fiber. It is a centuries-old bast fiber traditionally used for bedding and underclothes. This versatile plant requires less water than
cotton, naturally resists weeds, and matures quickly. In this demonstration, participants will learn how flax is grown and harvested, work with traditional hand tools to process the crop,
and finally see their fiber spun into linen yarn. Kallia Walkowiak is a fiber artist and weaving instructor at the ABK Weaving Center in Milwaukee. Dennis Carl is a leatherworker, gardener, and current steward of the Benjamin Church House Herb Garden.

Stories as We Move launched in 2020 as part of Lynden’s HOME virtual platform. The series pairs individuals who have faced forced displacement in its many forms in a conversational setting. Refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants interview those that have resettled to the United States, including friends and family that are based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as well as those that remain overseas. These interviews are reflections of relationships and conversations that we continue to have long after resettlement; they explore issues that our refugee friends and family members continue to face as they remain in their country of origin or interim country.

The Lynden/HOME Refugee Steering Committee book discussion group, moderated by Lynden’s Kim Khaira, is for those interested in firsthand accounts of displacement. We consider works of non-fiction and fiction, including autobiographical and semi-autobiographical works, by writers who have faced or are facing forced displacement as refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants. Where stories of persecution, historical trauma, and loss of livelihood are effortlessly conveyed by storytellers, journalists, and humanitarians who search out or stumble upon the lives of refugees, we seek out the words of those to whom these stories belong: the narrators who are the closest to their own stories, and the stories of their people, friends, family and, of course, refugees. In September we finish Her First Palestinian, a collection of stories by Saeed Teebi. Newcomers welcome!

Join the Lynden land team—Kyle Welna, Alyx Christenson, and Annalesa Albright–for a volunteer work day on the grounds. The Lynden Sculpture Garden is transforming its natural habitats and formal landscapes into sustainable and diverse ecosystems that highlight the natural beauty inherent in them. The Lynden’s goal is to steward healthy habitats for an array of native plants and wildlife while adding a vibrant mosaic of color and texture to this sculptural landscape through every season. With over 40 acres and more than half a dozen specialized garden spaces, the Lynden provides many volunteer and learning opportunities, from removing invasive species to planting new trees and plugs, weeding, pruning, collecting, and spreading seeds. The stone path leading up to the patio is nestled between an evolving native shade garden and a sprawling beech tree that is more than 100 years old. In September, we will be removing thistles and dandelions and sprucing up this welcoming walkway. We will also let you in on our new plans for this area, which include extending the walkway garden to encircle the beech tree.

Join artist-in-residence Jenna Knapp and collaborator Sevan Arabajian for our final sound bath of the season. Under the full moon we are invited to reflect on what has come to fruition in the most recent lunar cycle. Here we’ll use the full moon energy to expand into our potential and pleasure, and to pause to enjoy the fruits of our labor. Take some time out of your week to relax into a healing sound bath and celebrate all that you’ve accomplished through deep rest and receiving. Then, join Jenna in the labyrinth for a sunset candle walk.

Join art educators Claudia Orjuela and Denice Niebuhr for hands-on art making and all-senses-engaged exploration of the outdoor world at Lynden. Tuesdays in the Garden, designed for children aged 1-3, provides a nurturing environment where children’s curiosity and wonder are extended through play and exploration, and children and their caregivers learn and discover side-by-side. We’ll consider different themes, each designed to connect Lynden’s environment with children’s interests. We will encourage experimentation and the manipulation of art and natural materials to tell stories, solve problems, and develop relationships. The themes for September include Flower Friends, Labyrinth Explorations, Loose parts: Pebbles and Twigs, and Compost Sculpture.

Art club is a community of young artists who are independent in their art practice but value a place to exchange ideas and support, and to learn from one another. Students will design a long-term independent art project at the beginning of the session and meet for in-progress reviews, take part in creative art challenges, have conversations about contemporary artists, and discuss their work with Lynden educators and their peers. Students will present their work at our final art club meeting.

Lynden’s Art + Nature Lab engages participants aged 7-11 in inquiry-based art and nature learning, problem solving, and creative making. Over the course of each seven-week session, art educator Jeremy Stepien will take you on a series of art challenges and studio projects. Art + Nature Lab will meet indoors in the studio at Lynden with occasional excursions in the garden.

HOME Multilingual Story Time pops up at our September HOME Craft Market. Claudia Orjuela is joined by Ceci Tejeda for our first HOME Multilingual Story Time of the season. They will be reading a book suitable for 4-to-8-year-olds in Spanish and English, followed by some hands-on artmaking. HOME Story Time is a collaboration with the Milwaukee Public Library, the Islamic Resource Center, Hanan Refugee Relief Group, Alliance Française de Milwaukee, and Milwaukee African Women’s Association.

The Lynden administers the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Mary L. Nohl Fund Fellowships for Individual Artists program. The fellowship program, funded by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Mary L. Nohl Fund and Joy Engine, provides unrestricted funds for Established and Emerging artists to create new work or complete work in progress. Practicing artists residing in Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee, or Washington county are eligible to apply. Assistance for prospective applicants is available in four free, informal, virtual sessions. Polly Morris, joined by Nohl Fellows, will offer an application workshop on Thursday, September 7, 2023, 6-7:30 pm. She will also offer three Q&A sessions: Friday, September 15, 12 noon-1 pm; Saturday, September 23, 10-11 am; Thursday, September 28, 6:30-7:30 pm. All sessions are free, but you must register in advance. If you are unable to attend these sessions on Zoom, they will be recorded and posted on the web.

A visual artist, writer, and educator from Heflin, Alabama, Alayna Pernell, a 2023 recipient of the Mary L Nohl Emerging Artist Fellowship, examines the harsh realities and complexities experienced by Black American women and creates space for productive dialogue by enacting an ethic of care, respect, and grace.
This lecture will be available as a pre-recorded virtual event.

Leslie Perrino returns for a resin workshop on October 1, and Jenna Knapp and KP Kaszubowski lead a poetry workshop in the labyrinth on the 7th. Birding is on the docket for October 8, and dogs are welcome on October 21. Our October work days roll around at the end of the month, and Tuesdays in the Garden meets weekly to explore Artful Clay, A Nest for Explorers, Colorful Autumn, and Halloween. October is a good time to register for the next session of Art + Nature Lab (ages 7-11)—it begins on November 2. Nohl Fellowship applications are due October 4, then the behind-the-scenes jurying begins.

Since opening to the public in 2010, we have worked with artists, educators, students, and our community to create, support, and share experiences that integrate our collection of more than 50 monumental sculptures and temporary installations, Lynden’s community of artists, and the natural ecology of our 40-acre site.
