Senator Baldwin Announces $10.1 Million Investment to Redevelop Port of Green Bay, Boost Regional Economy

Project is estimated to have a total economic impact of more than $87 million in the first five years and create 20 new jobs

WISCONSIN — Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced that Brown County will receive more than $10.1 million for the Port of Green Bay to redevelop the decommissioned Pulliam power plant site into a state-of-the-art port facility. The project will include brownfield clean-up, filling in an old boat slip, dredging, resurfacing, and construction of a new dock wall, crane pad, asphalt pads, and rail lines.

This investment towards the redevelopment of the port is estimated to have a total economic impact of more than $87 million in the first five years and will create 20 jobs. The investment comes from the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP), a program funded by the Baldwin-supported Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Fiscal Year 2022 appropriations legislation. Senator Baldwin also advocated for this project, sending a letter of support to DOT.

“I supported this investment in the Port of Green Bay because it moves our Made in Wisconsin economy forward, creating and supporting good paying jobs and helping goods get to market efficiently,” said Senator Baldwin. “The new and improved port will be a vital economic engine for Wisconsin, providing critical connections for our supply chains, moving our Made in Wisconsin products, and helping lower costs for families.”

“The grant serves to support the long-term economic vitality of ports that are critical links to domestic and international trade markets,” said Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach. “This grant award closes the gap on our journey to strengthen the Port of Green Bay for the regional economy and improve the redevelopment efforts of downtown Green Bay. Thank you, Senator Baldwin, for your support in helping us competitively secure this grant.”

“The infusion of these federal dollars makes possible a transformational reinvention of 35 acres of our City’s downtown riverfront while strengthening the Port of Green Bay as an important economic engine of the region,” said Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich. “We are incredibly grateful to Sen. Baldwin, Sec. Buttigieg, and President Biden for recognizing the importance of this critical investment in our city’s future, which is brightest when partners in the private and public sectors come together to do what’s best for our communities and our people.”

“The redevelopment of the old WPS power plant into a state-of-the-art port facility will generate jobs and economic activity that will be transformational for Green Bay and NE Wisconsin,” said Brown County Port and Resource Recovery Department Director Dean Haen. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and Brown County is very grateful for all the local, state, and federal support to make this a reality.”

Earlier this year, Brown County received $15 million through the Neighborhood Investment Fund program, funding made possible by the American Rescue Plan Act, to accelerate this project at the Port of Green Bay.
