Sen. Kelda Roys Introduces SWIFTIE Act
MADISON – Today, State Sen. Kelda Roys announced the introduction of legislation to Stop Wildly Inflated Fees and Ticketing Industry Exploitation, the SWIFTIE Act. This legislation will stop unscrupulous scalpers, ban ticket bots, and ensure fair prices — because live events should be for fans, not profiteers.
“Live events are one of the great joys of life. If you are a fan, you deserve to go see your favorite artist or sporting event without being exploited by unscrupulous scalpers, third-party bot farms that drive up prices, and other practices that exploit fans, venues, and artists.
“All of us deserve to come together and share these wonderful live events without these consumer protection violations.”
The SWIFTIE Act does the following:
- require full disclosure of all fees and taxes to ensure that fans know the total cost of the ticket they are about to buy
- stop deceptive practices by unlicensed resellers that are intended to mislead consumers
- prevent profiteering and price-gouging by organized scalpers
- prohibit the use of bots and automated software to artificially hoard the supply of tickets before real fans can even buy theirs
This legislation began circulating for co-sponsorship on Thursday, Oct. 2. Sen. Jamie Wall (D-Green Bay) and Rep. Jill Billings (D-La Crosse) joined Sen. Roys as original authors of the legislation.
