Madison, WI — Representative Jim Piwowarczyk is proud of the Assembly’s passage of several bipartisan bills supporting Wisconsin families, improving maternal health care, strengthening cancer detection, and protecting taxpayers.

The Assembly approved AJR 127, a proposed constitutional amendment to prohibit governors from using the partial veto to create or increase taxes or fees without legislative approval. The measure will ultimately go before Wisconsin voters.

Lawmakers also passed a Republican-authored bill extending BadgerCare coverage for eligible mothers to 12 months postpartum, up from 60 days. The measure does not expand eligibility but allows women who already qualify to maintain coverage longer, helping address serious health risks such as heart conditions, stroke, and postpartum depression. The bill passed 95–1.

Additionally, the Assembly unanimously passed “Gail’s Law” (96–0), closing an insurance gap for women with dense breast tissue who need supplemental breast cancer screenings. Early detection significantly improves survival rates and reduces long-term treatment costs.

The Assembly unanimously approved a bill creating a $2,000 nonrefundable tax credit for families experiencing stillbirth. An average of 323 Wisconsin babies are lost to stillbirth each year, often leaving families with significant medical and funeral expenses. The bill passed 98–0.

“Losing a child is one of the most devastating experiences a family can endure,” said Rep. Piwowarczyk.

“While no policy can take away that pain, this compassionate step helps ease the financial burden during an incredibly difficult time.”

“These commonsense measures strengthen families, improve health outcomes, and protect taxpayers,” Piwowarczyk said.

Representative Piwowarczyk represents the 98th Assembly District which includes parts of Washington and Waukesha Counties.
