Rep. Barnes Statement on Gun Violence Prevention Legislation
As elected officials, we have a duty to keep our communities safe and secure from gun violence. However, innocent lives are being lost to violent shootings on our streets, and our state’s leaders continue to turn a blind eye to a growing epidemic of gun violence.
MADISON – Wisconsin State Representative Mandela Barnes (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement regarding legislation unveiled today that will require universal background checks on all firearms sales:
“As elected officials, we have a duty to keep our communities safe and secure from gun violence. However, innocent lives are being lost to violent shootings on our streets, and our state’s leaders continue to turn a blind eye to a growing epidemic of gun violence.
“Despite having an overwhelming majority in both houses of the state legislature, Wisconsin Republicans routinely choose to willfully ignore our calls to take real action to keep our communities safe and secure from senseless gun violence. In fact, members of the party in power have only pushed legislation to put more guns on our streets and making them more accessible to dangerous people, even as a rash of gun violence has consumed our state early this year. Easing the proliferation of firearms won’t make our communities safer, which is why I am proud to once again co-author common-sense legislation that will require universal background checks on all firearms sales.
“We can no longer ignore the cold hard fact that we have a severe and senseless epidemic of gun violence. The time is now to get serious about the safety and security of our neighborhoods by fighting to enact common-sense solutions that diminish the scourge of gun violence in our communities.”
