Rep. Barnes Demands Release of Promised Resources for Milwaukee Gun Violence Reduction
“As elected officials, we have a duty to keep our communities as safe and secure as possible from gun violence.”
MADISON – Wisconsin State Representative Mandela Barnes (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement regarding his request to have previously allocated funds for firearm offense prosecutions released at the upcoming Joint Finance Committee meeting on Thursday, October 15:
“As elected officials, we have a duty to keep our communities as safe and secure as possible from gun violence. However, lives continue to be lost to violent shootings at a shockingly record pace, and our state’s leaders continue to turn a blind eye to this tragic and growing epidemic. In fact, some of these same leaders have actively pushed legislation to put more guns on our streets and in our communities, even as an endless rash of gun violence continues to consume Milwaukee.
“Providing more funding to prosecute firearm offenses is a small, yet very tangible, piece of a much larger puzzle to combat gun violence that can and should be immediately approved by the Joint Finance Committee this Thursday. We can no longer hold Milwaukee families in suspense by neglecting to fulfill the promise made to them nearly three months ago, and I call on the Joint Finance Committee to make good on this promise on Thursday.”
A copy of the letter from Rep. Barnes to the Joint Finance Committee Co-Chairs is included as an attachment to this press release.
