Rep. Andraca Applauds Federal Rule Strengthening Background Checks

MADISON, Wis. — The U.S. Department of Justice announced yesterday that it has submitted the “Engaged in Business” rule, expanding the definition of who should be considered a firearms dealer and requiring all those who meet the new definition to get a federal license and run background checks on their gun sales.

Rep. Deb Andraca (D–Whitefish Bay), a longtime gun safety advocate, applauds the new rule but urges additional action from the state legislature to fully close the dangerous loophole on private gun sales. “I thank the Biden administration for passing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act which has enhanced background checks nationwide, and this new rule represents an additional step forward in public safety.

“However, state legislation is still needed here in Wisconsin to close the dangerous loophole that allows anyone to purchase a firearm from an unlicensed seller without a background check. Assembly Bill 368, introduced last June, would require a background check for every gun sale, but did not receive a hearing. Until our state legislature prioritizes common-sense gun laws, none of us will be safe from gun violence.”
