Milwaukee, WI (December 1, 2014) – Renaissance Theaterworks, Milwaukee’s only professional theater company dedicated to improving gender parity in the arts, is pleased to bring to the stage The Kreutzer Sonata by Nancy Harris, a thrilling one-man performance featuring jealousy, murder, and Beethoven.

Adapted from Leo Tolstoy’s classic novella, The Kreutzer Sonata is a twisted tale of love, lust, jealousy, and murder. Acclaimed Irish playwright Nancy Harris has transformed the novella into a gripping 90-minute theatrical experience, complete with live musicians performing Beethoven’s magnificent Violin Sonata No. 9.

Renaissance Theaterworks founder and Playwright-in-Residence Marie Kohler will direct the show, featuring Jim Pickering. A veteran of the Milwaukee stage, Pickering has been an Associate Artist at the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre for 40 years, and will be appearing on the Renaissance stage for the first time. They are joined by Milwaukee Opera Theatre’s Artistic Producing Director Jill Anna Ponasik as the Musical Director, and Milwaukee musicians Colleen Schmitt and Joe Ketchum.

Pozdnyshev, Tolstoy’s tormented narrator, is passionately and possessively in love with his beautiful young wife… but can he trust her? Text and music intertwine as this intense examination of the human psyche draws to its chilling conclusion.

“Nancy Harris’ magnificent adaptation is a marvel of economy and of subtle rewrites… This is an evening in the theatre that you won’t soon forget.”
