Healing Trauma as a Public Health Priority

MILWAUKEE, WI, Feb. 13, 2024 — Registration is now open for UW-Milwaukee’s annual Trauma in Our Community conference, taking place on June 27, 2024. The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Milwaukee and online. With a theme of Healing Trauma as a Public Health Priority, this year’s conference aims to provide education, inspiration and strategies related to trauma, violence and public health.

Dr. Deborah Prothrow-Stith, a national keynote speaker and pioneer in identifying youth violence as a health problem rather than merely a criminal justice issue, will speak on the topic of community violence as a public health concern. The conference will showcase insights from local and regional experts as they discuss trauma-informed practices applicable to a diverse range of human services and medical professionals. Networking opportunities and the ability for professionals to earn continuing education units or hours through attendance add to the compelling reasons to be part of this enriching event.

“We are looking forward to this year’s conference,” said conference coordinator Star DeLuca. “When we acknowledge and address trauma, we pave the way for improved mental well-being, enhanced physical health and stronger communities – all improving areas of public health.”

Trauma in Our Community conference is intended for teachers, school and youth counselors, psychologists, social workers, medical providers, parents and anyone interested in addressing trauma care throughout the healthcare system. Register by May 30 to receive the early bird discount rate. Go to uwm.edu/sce/conferences/trauma/ for more information and registration.
