Reclaiming Neighborhoods by Creating Art
MPT artery project presents free public workshops and parade
Milwaukeeans are invited to take part in Milwaukee Public Theatre’s Reclamation Parade and Pageant for the Harambee and Riverwest neighborhoods this summer. MPT, in collaboration with Harambee residents/artists Annushka Peck and Julia Swanson, will lead all ages in community-building projects ranging from hands-on workshops, to performances, to full-blown parades. The Reclamation Parade and workshops are Milwaukee Public Theatre’s part of “the artery project”, with other events being held throughout the city in 2014.

Reclamation Parade and Pageant
The story of Riverwest/Harambee will be explored with a Parade and Pageant performed on the Beerline Trail, starting at the Richards Street access and going north to Capitol Drive. Other arts groups joining MPT at the halfway point about 12:30 include Erick Ledesma, Kameelah + Yazmin Muhammad, STITCH Milwaukee, and Ina Onilu Drum & Dance Ensemble.
“the artery” projects are supported by Creational Trails project, funded by ArtPlace America. MPT received additional funding for the Reclamation Parade from the City of Milwaukee/NIDC. Milwaukee Public Theatre receives ongoing support from UPAF, Milwaukee County CAMPAC, and the City of Milwaukee Arts Board and the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts.
In addition, dozens of arts residencies and other free programs will be offered this summer, capped by Milwaukee Public Theatre’s 40th Anniversary celebration in September. More information is available at www.milwaukeepublictheatre.org.
