QPR Gatekeeper Training Comes to City Hall on Friday
September is National Suicide Prevention Month, a dedicated time to raise awareness, break the stigma, and share vital mental health resources. As part of this effort, Alderwoman Sharlen Moore has collaborated with the Friendship Circle to provide QPR Gatekeeper Training at City Hall on Friday, September 18, from 2 – 3 p.m. The training is free, and registration is encouraged. Registration can be accessed at Milwaukee.gov/QPRTraining.
QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) is an intervention tool and not a form of counseling or treatment. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help.
“People experience struggles and hardships in different ways. Because you can never know with 100% certainty what someone is going through, tools provided through offerings like the QPR Gatekeeper training can equip anyone with the resources to notice the signs that someone may be contemplating suicide, and have the ability to get them the support they need,” said Alderwoman Moore. “This hits particularly close to home for me, as it was two years ago we lost a close friend and former Alderperson Jonathan Brostoff. I’m proud to support this training, hosted by the Friendship Circle, in his memory.”
