Public Invited to Walk and Review Downtown Section of I-794 to Envision Replacement With At-Grade Boulevard, Development
Milwaukee (Nov. 14, 2025) – The Rethink 794 team is leading the first in a series of “Walk & Rolls” along a Downtown Milwaukee segment of the I-794 corridor at noon this Tuesday, Nov. 18, to look first-hand at the highway area and discuss its future.
Community input will be gathered about how I-794 exists today and will be summarized to make recommendations for the decisions about the future of I-794, including those that prioritize connection, public health, and safety for all users of the corridor.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has said this 9/10-mile segment west of (but not including) the Hoan Bridge must be torn down because of age. The department is considering three options:
- Reconstructing the highway segment as-is;
- Rebuilding the highway with changes;
- Replacing the current structure with an at-grade boulevard allowing for much more housing, commercial, office, public space, green spaces and connection to the street grid.
The walk starts at 12 p.m. in front of Stone Creek – Factory Café, 422 N 5th St. The 30-minute walk will be facilitated by Taylor Korslin of Rethink 794’s citizen advocate team and Raphie Torralba, Transportation Policy Analyst for 1000 Friends of Wisconsin.
The walk will end inside Stone Creek with free coffee and bakery, fueling a discussion of findings and opportunities for a reimagined corridor. Those who use wheelchairs, bicycles or mobility devices are welcome.
Registration for the event is recommended at: https://tinyurl.com/walk794
The walk is being organized by Rethink 794, a community-driven initiative led by local advocates and volunteer professionals, in coordination with 1000 Friends of Wisconsin, which promotes land use policies and activities to advance healthy communities, positive economic outcomes and environmental benefits in Wisconsin.
