Milwaukee, November 21, 2013 – Northwestern Mutual today announced it has selected Veit, a specialty contracting and waste management firm with an office in the Milwaukee area, to serve as project manager for the deconstruction of the company’s east office building in downtown Milwaukee. The deconstruction of the east building is the next phase in the construction of the new 1.1 million-square-foot Northwestern Mutual Tower and Commons.

Veit, headquartered in Minnesota, operates a local office in New Berlin. The firm will partner with Milwaukee-area contractors to perform a variety of functions throughout the deconstruction process.

“We’re excited to execute this important phase of our project and we welcome Veit to help us move forward as we prepare to build the Northwestern Mutual Tower and Commons,” said Scott Wollenzein, Northwestern Mutual facility operations consultant. “We also look forward to providing hundreds of local jobs over the year-long deconstruction process.”

The multi-layered, floor-by-floor deconstruction of the east office building is expected to begin in December and be completed in the fall of 2014. Crews have already begun preparation that includes the installation of construction fencing and scaffolding, initial foundation work and the removal of bushes and trees. Several trees will be transported to and replanted on Northwestern Mutual’s Franklin campus.

I am very pleased to see that NM will be undertaking a deconstruction (as opposed to a demolition). I hope they will track the quantity of materials diverted from the landfill and also tell the story of the material dispositions. I know there will be lots of materials that can be recycled, salvaged, repurposed, or upcycled. Thanks for leading NM.
