MADISON, Wis. — James Malcolm of Port Washington, Wisconsin has been appointed chairman of the Wisconsin Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR).

ESGR, a Department of Defense office, was established in 1972 to promote cooperation and understanding between reserve component service members and their civilian employers, and to assist in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employee’s military commitment.

Malcolm — the proud son of a World War II veteran and brother of a Vietnam veteran — has been an ESGR volunteer for nine years, holding such positions as Area 2 vice chair, Veteran Affinity Group director, and Employer Outreach director.

“Although I have not personally served in the military, I come from a military family and greatly appreciate the sacrifices veterans have made in serving our great nation,” Malcolm said. “My goal as chairman is to ensure that employers also understand and appreciate the sacrifices made by their employees who also serve in the Guard and Reserves, and the rights our reserve component members have concerning employment.”

Malcolm was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, and moved to Columbus, Ohio at a young age. He is a 1972 graduate of St. Francis DeSales High School and a 1976 graduate of Ohio Dominican College. He is a vocalist and has performed with local community and church groups. An avid cyclist, he has completed three eight-day Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) events.

Malcom is currently vice president of operations for Blue Ocean mercantile, a small beer import and export company, and owns the consulting business Port Washington Global Logistics. He retired from Miller Coors in 2013 after 34 years with the company, serving in various leadership positions that resulted in his working in 60 countries across multiple continents. In 2008 he, along with a Vietnam veteran coworker, founded one of the first Veterans Affinity groups in Wisconsin. The Miller Coors Veterans Group in Milwaukee spread to five other breweries in subsequent years.

He and his wife Marilyn have three adult children, and a family of pets.
