The Milwaukee Police Department is investigating a shots fired incident that occurred on Saturday, November 28, 2020, at approximately 6:10 p.m., on the 4000 block of W. Center Street.

At approximately 6:00 p.m., uniformed Milwaukee Police officers in a marked squad car observed a vehicle operating in a reckless manner in the area of N. 37th Street and W. North Avenue. The officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop of the vehicle but the driver refused to stop, fled and a vehicle pursuit ensued.

The initial squad lost sight of the suspect vehicle but, shortly thereafter, another Milwaukee Police squad observed the auto still operating recklessly in the area of N. Sherman Boulevard and W. Locust Street. That squad attempted to stop the auto that continued to flee eastbound on W. Center Street, where it subsequently crashed into an embankment in the 4100 block of W. Center Street.

The suspects fled on foot from the vehicle and a foot pursuit ensued. During the foot pursuit, the driver of the vehicle produced a firearm and discharged it. In response, an officer returned fire. The suspect, an 18-year-old male, was taken into custody without further incident. The suspect’s firearm was recovered. Neither the suspect nor the officer were injured in this incident; however, due to the crash, the suspect was taken to a local hospital for medical clearance as a precaution.

A second occupant of the vehicle, a 16-year-old male, was also taken into custody. A check of the suspect vehicle revealed it was reported stolen.

The officer involved is a 45-year-old male with over 7 years of service. The officer was placed on administrative duty.

This an ongoing investigation. The Criminal Investigation Bureau of the Milwaukee Police Department is investigating this incident.
