Milwaukee Riverkeeper Spring Cleanup Event Makes for Happy Rivers and Healthy Communities

By - Apr 11th, 2022 02:44 pm

MILWAUKEE – Every Spring, Milwaukee Riverkeeper hosts a massive, one-day, community-wide effort to clean up the waterways and care for the community. Last year alone, over 3,000 volunteers removed more than 110,000 pounds of trash from 95 different locations across the watershed in just one day.

This year is no different and on Saturday, April, 23 from 9 am – 12 pm at locations all along the rivers throughout Milwaukee, Ozaukee, and Washington, Counties, Milwaukee Riverkeeper will host its 27th Annual Spring Cleanup. Thousands of volunteers across the area will remove trash and plastic litter that has found its way down to the river and surrounding land.

This Earth Day event is a fun and meaningful way to bring the community together and it is significant for more than other reasons, too since this year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act. In 1972, the Clean Water Act ended the culture of dumping raw sewage and untreated industrial waste into our waters and highlighted the importance of protecting and restoring water. The Clean Water Act drastically changed the health and safety of our waterways for the better. To celebrate its birthday, Milwaukee Riverkeeper hopes to inspire people to take action in their own neighborhoods.

The Milwaukee Riverkeeper Spring Cleanup is a truly remarkable event, connecting thousands of people across our community with one task: to beautify and restore our community, rivers, and parks that mean so much to us, especially as we recover from the global pandemic and continue to seek solace in these natural, public spaces.

Participants must register ahead of time to take part. Those interested in joining the cleanup on April 23rd can register here: bit.ly/MRKCleanup27
