The Chinese Crossbow
The Chinese repeating crossbow (zhūgé nǔ) offered greater defensive capability through increased firepower. This early 19th-century two chamber example was used for village defense as well as hunting. Larger forms were used by the military for siege-work and ship to ship battle.
