MILWAUKEE County Executive David Crowley has proclaimed September as Suicide Prevention Month, highlighting the County’s dedication to addressing mental health challenges through expanding programs, resources, and services. This month serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about suicide prevention and emphasize the importance of accessible mental health care for all residents.

“Expanding access to mental health services has been a cornerstone of our mission to achieve racial equity and ensure Milwaukee County becomes the healthiest community in Wisconsin,” said County Executive Crowley. “Suicide Prevention Month reminds us of the importance of providing mental health services and resources in ensuring every resident has access to the support they need. By continuing to innovate and expand these services, we can save lives and create a stronger, healthier community.”

Milwaukee County’s commitment to mental health is exemplified through several initiatives, including:

  • No Wrong Door Model: “No Wrong Door” means that regardless of how an individual connects to the Milwaukee County Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) and the health and human services system of care, they will have access to all services and resources offered by DHHS, and countless community partners. A part of DHHS’ strategic plan since 2020, “No Wrong Door” aims to improve the experience of connecting with DHHS for the entire community while more efficiently connecting our residents with the programs or services they need.
  • Mental Health Emergency Center: This new facility, a partnership between Milwaukee County and the health care systems, located in the King Park neighborhood provides greater access for individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis, ensuring critical services reach individuals experiencing mental health or substance use disorder-related crises. During its first year of operations, the center served over 7,000 community members.
  • Deployment of Mental Health Navigators: Recognizing the importance of proactive support, County Executive Crowley’s administration deployed Mental Health Navigators throughout the community. These dedicated professionals provide essential resources and assistance to individuals navigating mental health challenges or substance use disorder crises.
  • Milwaukee Mobile Crisis/Milwaukee County 24-Hour Crisis Line: The County provides a 24-hour mobile crisis line staffed by licensed counselors, therapists, psychologists, and nurses. This service offers immediate intervention for individuals experiencing a mental health crisis, ensuring professional support is always available. Anyone experiencing a mental health crisis can receive immediate support by calling the Milwaukee County 24-Hour Crisis Line at 414-257-7222.
  • Redesign of Behavioral Health Services: Under Crowley’s leadership, the Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Services has undergone a redesign more than a decade in the making. Significant developments include Granite Hills Hospital, an acute behavioral health care facility located in West Allis, and transitioning services to community partnerships, located in neighborhoods with the greatest need. This new model creates easier access to care, the expansion of crisis services and the Mental Health Emergency Center.

The County’s efforts to improve mental health services are part of a broader vision to foster a healthier, more equitable community. Through continued investment in these programs and ongoing collaboration with community partners, Milwaukee County is making strides in reducing the stigma around mental health and ensuring that every resident has access to the care they deserve.
