Marquette University to host panel discussion “A Transatlantic Rift? The Future of U.S.-European Relations”

This event is part of the Marquette Forum, a yearlong series of events focusing on civic dialogue and the state of democracies across the world.

MILWAUKEE — Marquette University will host a panel discussion titled “A Transatlantic Rift? The Future of U.S.-European Relations” on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 10:30 a.m. in Raynor Memorial Libraries, Beaumier Suites (lower level), 1355 W. Wisconsin Ave. This event is part of the Marquette Forum, a yearlong series of events focusing on civic dialogue and the state of democracies across the world.

The panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Risa Brooks, associate professor of political science, will feature H.E. Pjer Šimunović, ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to the U.S.; H.E. Jonatan Vseviov, ambassador of Estonia to the U.S.; and Dr. Andrea Kendall-Taylor, senior fellow and director of Transatlantic Security Program in the Center for a New American Security.

Šimunović has served as Croatia’s ambassador to the United States since September 2017. A regular speaker at international conferences and seminars on security issues, Šimunović is the author of a range of studies and articles dealing with the arms trade and defense industry, post-Communist national security, NATO enlargement, defense transformation, international peace-keeping and stabilization operations, and counterterrorism

Vseviov has been Estonia´s ambassador to the United States since August 2018. This is his third diplomatic post in Washington, D.C. Before assuming his current duties, Vseviov worked at the Estonian Ministry of Defense for 10 years, rising to the post of permanent secretary. Until his appointment as permanent secretary in January 2016, Vseviov served as the undersecretary for defense planning, the acting undersecretary for defense policy, and director of policy planning.

Andrea Kendall-Taylor is a senior fellow and director of the Transatlantic Security Program at the Center for a New American Security. She focuses on national security challenges facing the United States and Europe, including Russia, populism and the strength of the Transatlantic Alliance. Prior to joining CNAS, Andrea served for nine years as a senior intelligence officer. In addition to her role with CNAS, Kendall-Taylor is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service.
