Deb Weaver, administrative assistant for undergraduate programs and department inquiries in the Department of Biological Sciences in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, is a recipient of a 2020 Excellence in University Service Award.

Weaver, who self-identifies as the “mother hen” or “butt kicker” of the office, sought to model her life after her father and grandfather who demonstrated great integrity, kindness, exceptional work ethic and strong affinity for “doing the right thing.” Weaver’s colleagues attest their daily interactions with Weaver in the workplace would make her role models proud.

A person who nominated Weaver for the award wrote: “Deb has continually gone above and beyond her job duties to ensure that students, faculty and staff are taken care of. Her years of service have made her a wealth of institutional knowledge and (she) is often where faculty, students and members across campus go to when information is not easily found.”

Weaver is known for her tireless efforts to help others and better the college. She often works weekends and after hours to ensure faculty meet deadlines. Admiration for Weaver’s energy and initiative is echoed across more than a dozen award nominations submitted by her coworkers.

Several colleagues wrote, “Deb always puts Marquette first.” Another simply included, “Deb IS the Department of Biological Sciences.”

Weaver said she believes if she executes her job correctly by anticipating the needs of others, no one should know she is there. Testimonies of her peers, though, prove Weaver’s dedication to her job, positive attitude, sense of humor and unmatched department expertise make her a sought-after professional, advocate and friend.

The Excellence in University Service Awards recognize staff members for their contributions to the essential work of Marquette at the highest level of excellence. Candidates are nominated based on meritorious service that is above and beyond the duties normally assigned to their positions.
