MILWAUKEE, WI (May 21, 2020) – The Gathering is a local community meal program that provides close to 90,000 free meals a year to the hungry and homeless populations. During the COVID-19 crisis, the local nonprofit is providing access to fresh produce to aid The Tandem’s efforts to feed the community.

“The ability to secure at no cost fresh fruits and vegetables for our meal program is invaluable”, says Caitlin Cullen, Chef and Owner of Tandem. “…having a community partner around the corner allows us to do more at no cost to us. And it allows the folks of Lindsay Heights to have one less thing to worry about – they know where to get their next meal.”

When the crisis first struck Milwaukee, The Tandem opened its doors to provide free meals to the community. The local restaurant began its philanthropic efforts on March 18 and has since created a buzz around the city. The Gathering caught wind of The Tandem’s initiative from Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin and began apportioning its own supplies including fresh Brussels sprouts, avocados, onions, cilantro and more.

“It’s very important to us to continue to live our Mission,” says Lyn Hildenbrand, Executive Director of The Gathering. “It was a no-brainer for us to partner with Tandem when it began its free meal service. We were thrilled to hear that another food resource would become available for our neighbors in need and we are eager to help in any way we can…”

Typically, The Gathering serves freshly prepared, hot, nutritious meals to the hungry and homeless populations. In emergency response to COVID-19 and with the guidance of The Milwaukee Health Department and the CDC, the community meal program is currently serving carryout meals across its four meal sites, Monday-Saturday. The Gathering provides breakfast during the week and Tandem serves lunch/dinner in the Lindsay Heights neighborhood. Regardless of circumstance, The Gathering continues to live in its Mission to provide meals and associated services to those who would otherwise go hungry or without.
