Local 3rd Graders to Participate in December 12 Common Council Meeting

Youth were selected as winners of Alderperson for a Day Essay Contest

By - Dec 11th, 2023 01:34 pm

As part of the Common Council meeting on Tuesday, December 12, 18 3rd graders from Golda Meir will participate in the Council meeting as the selected winners of the Alderperson for a Day essay content. Created by Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, and supported by the entire Common Council, Alderperson for a Day challenged 3rd graders learning about government to consider issues they see in their community, and write a short essay about what they would do to improve their community if they were an Alderperson for a Day.

“Engaging youth in the local government process and hearing their thoughts about issues in the community is important, but sometimes overlooked. That is why we sought to create the Alderperson for a Day essay contest so these young people could have an outlet to share their ideas and know their local representatives are listening,” said the Council members. “These young people are the future leaders of our community, and we are thrilled by the turnout and look forward to welcoming these young people to City Hall tomorrow.”

In addition to joining the Common Council meeting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, December 12, the contest winners will also participate in a talkback with Council members to discuss ways in which they would like to see the community improved. The group discussion will occur after the conclusion of the Common Council meeting.
