Invaded by the Marvelous at Acacia

The House by the Stable is a cosmic tale, with comedy, depth and imagination

“[Charles Williams writes] that sort of [story],” C.S. Lewis remarked, “in which we begin by saying, let us suppose that this everyday world were at some one point invaded by the marvelous.” Two of Williams’ short plays, The House by the Stable and its sequel, Grab and Grace, dramatize the struggle of good and evil, personifying the forces that grapple for an upper hand—including Man, Pride, Faith, Hell and Grace. They’re fantasies of truth, told with humility, by a 20th century master of the genre. Rarely staged, both plays are being presented as one production at Acacia Theatre under the title The House by the Stable.

A member of the Inklings—the distinguished writing group that included C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien—Williams was a prolific writer who excelled in a range of styles, admired by W.H. Auden and T.S. Eliot. The House by the Stable is “perfectly controlled allegory,” writes Williams scholar Dr. Sørina Higgins. “[It] works smoothly and totally on either of the two levels, and also entirely at both levels together…[full of moments that are] funny and light and thoughtful all at once.”

Featuring performers fresh from Acacia’s “first-rate” (Shepherd Express) staging of the Jane Austen tribute Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley, this production promises to be a rare and thrilling voyage through fantasy, comedy, drama and allegory.
