Horrific crash takes 4 lives, injures 2 others
Statement of Alderman Mark Chambers, Jr. May 15, 2023
Last night four individuals, including three minors, were killed in a horrific crash that took place near N. 60th St. and W. Fond du Lac Ave. My heart breaks for those who lost a loved one in this incident, and I send my best to them during this tragic, difficult time.
The loss of life involving automobiles in our city is far too high. It frustrates and angers me and my constituents (and most across the city) because many – if not all – of these deaths are preventable.
Having the ability to drive a car is a privilege that should be taken seriously. We shouldn’t have to live in a community where people feel unsafe driving, crossing streets, or otherwise interacting with other drivers.
It is imperative that we all practice safe, defensive driving habits, being mindful of not only our safety, but also the safety of others, whenever we get behind the wheel. I encourage others to spread this message and do the same. Driving the speed limit, slowing and fully stopping at traffic lights and signs, or yielding to pedestrians might add a couple extra minutes to your travel time, but is well worth it to keep our community safe.

This is awful. Beyond tragic. They killed a one-year-old little girl!
Drinking, excessive speeding, and running a red light.
Was that Kia stolen? I’ve had enough of this “we must do something.”
It is no different than “thoughts and prayers” after another mass shooting.
This problem has been going on for years. We don’t want to hear any more
meaningless babbling from the mayor – do something! Get in a car, take a radio,
and drive around. Take some of your big-money friends. And have some Aldermen
get out of City Hall and join you on the road. It seems like everyone is too busy
cutting ribbons to do something about this.
The Common Council said it was going to sue Hyundai/Kia.
That was in 2021. What the heck is wrong with all the politicians
in City Hall? Get off your a## and do something. We are tired of your talk.
Do something or resign. You were all elected to lead, not to cry fake tears
year after year. Almost everyone in City Hall is up for election in less than a year.
Do something or we will remove you and find people who care and don’t just
show up and babble.

Since those who died were “ejected” from the car, that implies they weren’t wearing seatbelts. Officials need to do more to encourage seatbelt use by all drivers. A full on campaign is needed so that even in a crash, occupants may be injured but will live if belted.
Make Drivers Ed mandatory.
No Drivers Ed results in no drivers license, no auto insurance, no motor vehicle ownership (of any kind).
The State has billions of surplus dollars to make this happen.
