Historic Preservation Commission Wins 2024 Historic Preservation Excellence Award
The City of Milwaukee Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) has received the 2024 Historic Preservation Excellence Award in the Identification and Designation category from the Wisconsin Association of Historic Preservation Commissions (WAHPC). The award is given annually to a historic preservation commission that sponsored a “significant architectural or archaeological survey,” nominated a site to the State or National Register of Historical Places, or sponsored a local landmark’s designation.
The Milwaukee HPC is being recognized for its intensive and thorough architectural survey of Milwaukee houses of worship built between 1920 and 1980, prepared in partnership with UW-Milwaukee’s Cultural Resource Management program, and the Wisconsin State Historic Preservation Office. The submission was prepared by HPC senior planners Tim Askin and Andrew Stern, and the project team at UW-Milwaukee was led by author and lead historian Justin Miller.
HPC Chair Ann Pieper Eisenbrown congratulated her colleagues on winning such an outstanding award. “I am so proud of everyone at the Milwaukee HPC who participated in the creation of this survey,” said Ms. Eisenbrown. “Their hard work and dedication to the City of Milwaukee is unparalleled and is conveyed admirably in this meticulous, well-researched, and scholarly survey. Because of this team’s efforts, we can more fully understand and appreciate the history of some of our city’s beautiful and unique places of worship, as well as gain a better understanding of Milwaukee’s fascinating history in general.”
The full survey can be accessed here. The award will be presented at the WAHPC 2024 Spring Conference in Mineral Point on April 25.
