MADISON, WI—This April will bring a rotation of celestial and otherworldly creations as the Zodiac comes to earth at the 2019 Hair Affair. The Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA) will present the 6th biennial occurrence of this fantastical runway show. Formidable hair sculptures, gravity-defying concoctions, and awe-inspiring visual delights await attendees of this popular fundraiser, with this year’s cosmic theme.

At center stage of this event is the runway show, with models descending the museum’s iconic glass stairway, orbiting in the grand MMoCA lobby, and flaunting colossal coiffures in the State Street Gallery. Hair Affair supports the museum’s free exhibitions and education programs, while showcasing the skill and creativity of premier salons and stylists from southern Wisconsin. Inspired by the theme of Zodiac, participating stylists will wow attendees on Thursday, April 25, 2019 from 7 to 10:30 pm.

Invention, imagination, and skill are key in creating these incredible hair constructions. Going beyond the expected, stylists contributing to the 2019 event are drawing inspiration from cultures around the world. Hair Affair is unlike other hair shows—where they demonstrate techniques for trendy hair styles and coloring—this event allows stylists to dream up the most exceptional and gigantic hair styles imaginable.

Examples from past years bear witness to the stylists’ daring freedom of expression:

  • A dark forest came to life with branches and webs nestled high atop a majestic model’s head designed by KRS Hair and Wax Studio.
  • A fiery Viking-inspired flowing mane completed with long, ornate braids and twists was wrapped around a model from the designers of RZ & Company.
  • Iris, the Greek Goddess of the Rainbow, was showcased with a hair sculpture of fluffy clouds and a lit rainbow designed by Temptd Salon & Spa.
  • An alluring black hole design which radiated five feet around the head of a stately model. Designer: Rejuvenation Spa.
  • The quintessence of spring was captured, with the model’s own hair interwoven with additional fibers to represent budding branches and butterflies made of real hair designed by William Jon Salon.

NEW THIS YEAR

For the first time ever, MMoCA welcomed students from beauty and cosmetology schools to apply to participate in the event as “Emerging Stylists.” This was a special opportunity for students who wanted to build their portfolio, network within the hair and beauty community, as well as gain exposure in the creative industry. MMoCA is excited to provide unique, arts-based opportunities to young professionals.

Hair Affair 2019 will feature 15 models representing 14 participating stylists and salons: Anaala Salon & Spa; Cha Cha Beauty & Barber; Follicle Hair Studio; Hair Forum; London’s Healthy Hair; Neroli Salon & Spa; RZ & Company; Studio Z Salon; Temptd Salon & Spa; Thorps Haircuts & Color; Union Hair Parlor; Wicked Beauty; and William Jon Salon, as well as student-based designs from Empire Beauty School and Paul Mitchell, The School in Milwaukee.

Guests will enjoy delectable seasonal hors d’oeuvres from Fresco, cocktails, mixes from DJ Nick Nice, photo booths, and a raffle offering amazing prize packages.

Reservations are now available. The rates are $70 for general admission standing room only ($60 for MMoCA Members); $90 for Gallery Seating ($80 for MMoCA Members); $140 for exclusive VIP seating and fare ($120 for MMoCA Members).
