WAUKESHA – Governor Scott Walker visited Martha Merrell’s Bookstore today to highlight his plan for a child sales tax rebate and sales tax holiday package. Under the proposed legislation, Wisconsin families would receive $100 for every child living at home under 18 through a check in the mail this year, and all Wisconsinites would benefit from a sales tax holiday planned for the first weekend in August.

“One of the best ways to provide tax relief for middle-class Wisconsin families is through a child sales tax rebate and sales tax holiday package,” said Governor Walker. “We have already provided over $8 billion in across the board tax relief since 2011, and now is the time to deliver targeted relief to hardworking families. A check in the mail for a couple hundred dollars, as well as an August sales tax holiday, would go a long way towards helping parents and grandparents with the cost of sending their kids back-to-school in the fall.”

The proposed legislation sets a new sales tax holiday for August 4-5, 2018. Consumers would be exempt from paying state sales tax on all retail “off the shelf” items up to $100. The exemption would not apply to the sale of taxable services, prepared food, motor vehicles, motor vehicle parts, tangible or intangible property used to access telecommunications services, tangible or intangible property provided by a utility, or alcohol and tobacco products.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR), the child tax credit rebate is estimated at $122.1 million in fiscal year 2018. DOR also estimates that the one-time sales tax holiday will provide approximately $50 million in tax relief in fiscal year 2019.

oohhh. Can’t wait. I will be happy to donate mine to a deserving Democratic candidate for governor.

  2. ERIC J. says:

-For those families that no longer have children in school: Where is their tax break ?? They all still pay state taxes and local school taxes.

-Why do I have to spend money in order not to be charged a sales tax for two days in August as a ” tax break” ??

  3. Terry says:

Career Politician Scott Walker and republicans newest scheme to bribe voters right before an election with a hundred bucks. Sad how low Career Politician Walker and his gaggle of crooked republicans have stooped. Walker sold the state out and urned Wisconsin into a pothole strewn, low wage, debt ridden dump ruled by his out of state mega-rich donors. Wisconsin deserves better!
