Governor Walker Honors Fallen Law Enforcement Officers

Madison – Governor Scott Walker honored fallen Milwaukee County law enforcement officers today during the annual Greater Milwaukee Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony.

“Every day, our law enforcement officers put their well-being and lives on the line to protect the citizens of Wisconsin,” Governor Walker said. “For that, we owe them respect and honor their selfless courage. Today, we commemorate all law enforcement officers who paid the ultimate price for our safety with their lives, especially Officer Raabe, Deputy Sheriff Aleman, and Officer O’Brien. We keep them, their families, and their loved ones in our thoughts and prayers.”

A wreath was presented in remembrance of three Milwaukee County law enforcement officers at the ceremony.

Officer George H. Raabe was shot and killed in the line of duty on November 2, 1937, when he and two other officers surprised three safe crackers as they attempted to burglarize a dairy company. Officer Raabe had served the Milwaukee Police Department for eight years.

Deputy Sheriff Sergio Aleman was killed in the line of duty when the sheriff’s office motorist assistance truck struck the back of a flatbed tow truck that was stopped on the shoulder of the highway on July 31, 2012. Deputy Aleman was extricated from the vehicle and brought to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He had served the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office for 18 years.

Officer David O’Brien was killed in the line of duty by a bomb explosion on November 24, 1917. The bomb was found near a church and brought to the department’s central police station by two boys. While the shift keeper was showing it to the shift commander it exploded, killing Officer O’Brien, eight other members of the Milwaukee Police Department, and a civilian. Officer O’Brien had served the Milwaukee Police Department for 20 years.

In addition, Governor Walker honored Public Safety Officer Michael Josua Ventura, Deputy Sheriff Dan Thomas Glaze, Jr., Detective Sergeant Jason T. Weiland, and Trooper Anthony J. Borostowski.

Public Safety Officer Michael Ventura died in the line of duty on July 8, 2016, following a tragic automobile accident. He joined the Salem Department of Public Safety in 2016 following his graduation from Gateway Technical Law Enforcement Academy.

Deputy Sheriff Dan Glaze, Jr. was shot and killed in the line of duty after responding to a call about a suspicious vehicle on October 29, 2016. He had served as a law enforcement officer for ten years.

Detective Sergeant Jason Weiland was shot and killed in the line of duty on March 22, 2017. He devoted his life to protecting the people of Marathon County as a member of the Everest Metropolitan Police Department since 2002 and other law enforcement capacities since 1999.

Trooper Anthony Borostowski died in the line of duty on April 11, 2017, after his patrol car struck a tree on Interstate 90/94. He was a member of the Wisconsin State Patrol’s 60^th Recruit Class and had served as a trooper since 2014.
