Governor Walker Delivers Remarks at Greater Milwaukee Law Enforcement Memorial Honoring Fallen Officers

MILWAUKEE – Governor Scott Walker delivered remarks today at the Greater Milwaukee Law Enforcement Memorial Service, honoring the sacrifices of fallen law enforcement officers and their families.

“Milwaukee law enforcement officers, and officers all over Wisconsin, work every day to make our communities safe,” said Governor Walker. “They selflessly put their lives on the line to keep our schools and neighborhoods secure, to address the opioid epidemic, and to ensure Wisconsin continues to be one of the best places to live. Today, we especially honor and remember those who gave their lives in service to their communities, including those we lost in the last year. Thank you to all those who have served and all who are serving in our communities.”

Three Greater Milwaukee law enforcement officers were remembered during a wreath-laying presentation at the ceremony:

• Officer Gerald Hempe, 31, Milwaukee Police Department, was shot and killed during a traffic stop while attempting to arrest the passenger of a vehicle on the night of January 31, 1973. Officer Hempe had been a member of the Milwaukee Police Department for six years.
• Officer Charles Smith, 24, Milwaukee Police Department, was shot and killed during a traffic stop while attempting to arrest the passenger of a vehicle on the night of January 31, 1973. Officer Smith had been a member of the Milwaukee Police Department for eight months and had previously served with the United States Navy.
• Deputy Sheriff Sung Hui Bang, 31, Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department, was killed in a helicopter accident while assisting in the search for a suspect on August 17, 2000. Deputy Bang, the pilot, had been employed with the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department for three years.

In addition, Governor Walker honored Detective Jason T. Weinland and Trooper Anthony J. Borostowski, who lost their lives in 2017:

• Detective Jason Thomas Weiland, 40, Everest Metropolitan Police Department, was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance and multiple shootings on March 22, 2017. Detective Weiland was an 18-year veteran of law enforcement and had served with the Everest Metropolitan Police Department for 15 years.
• Trooper Anthony Joseph Borostowski, 34, Wisconsin State Patrol, was killed in a single-vehicle crash while on patrol in the early morning on April 11, 2017. Trooper Borostowski was a member of the Wisconsin Army National Guard and had served with the Wisconsin State Patrol for three years.
