MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers today signed Executive Order #218 making minor, technical changes to the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. The order makes minor adjustments as to council membership and designates the council as the advisory body to guide the administration of the State Crisis Intervention Program grant initiative under the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.

The council, originally created in 2012, has been continued through multiple executive orders and is charged with promoting and facilitating the implementation of effective criminal justice policies and practices that maximize justice and the safety of the public. Executive Order #218 supersedes in part Executive Order #182 signed on January 4, 2023, and supersedes and replaces Executive Order #41, signed on August 22, 2019.

Thanks to Gov Evers for leading much needed reform.

  2. ZeeManMke says:

I have little faith the Statewide Criminal Justice Coordinating Council will accomplish anything equitable. Why? Becuase it is dominated by prosecutors, sheriffs and jailers. Two token positions have been given to the State Public Defender. One unfilled. Private bar criminal defnese counsel? None. https://cjcc.doj.wi.gov/

The court system, is discussed on its web site as if it was nothing more than an information repository. This Council was created by Scott Walker. That alone gives me pause. We do need to do something about a rascist criminal justice system. Then Chief Justice Roggensack commissioned an exhaustive study showing without that minorities in the same position as white receive on average 25%-33% longer prison sentences. Where is that study? I wish these people well but expecting prosecutors to create a fair system is something that has never happened and never will. I question the intrusion into the judiciary. This co-equal branch of government is not an afterthought as to our criminal justice system. It is the focul point.
