Gov. Evers Signs Assembly Bill 22 Requiring Human Trafficking Education for Commercial Drivers

By - Nov 20th, 2019 12:36 pm

MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers today signed Assembly Bill 22, now 2019 Wisconsin Act 27, a bipartisan bill that requires educational training on the recognition and prevention of human trafficking for commercial truck drivers.

The bill also directs the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the Wisconsin Department of Justice, and the Wisconsin Technical College System Board to establish industry specific training materials.

“Human trafficking impacts all of Wisconsin’s 72 counties, and truck drivers can play a critical role in reducing and preventing this crime,” said Gov. Evers. “Truck drivers are on the front line of this issue as they not only reach every corner of our state, but often travel across state lines. By ensuring that they are vigilant and have the knowledge and training to recognize human trafficking, we can protect vulnerable individuals from continued exploitation.”

Assembly Bill 22, now 2019 Wisconsin Act 27:

    • Provides instruction in the recognition and prevention of human trafficking for driver education courses for the operation of commercial motor vehicles.
    • Requires the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Wisconsin Department of Transportation, and the Wisconsin Technical College System Board to identify and establish industry specific instruction materials no later than June 30, 2021.
