MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers announced today his appointment of Morgan Johanning to serve as Lafayette County District Attorney. The appointment fills a vacancy created by former District Attorney Jenna Gill’s appointment to the Lafayette County Circuit Court. Johanning will serve for the remainder of the unexpired term that ends January 2025.

“Morgan Johanning’s commitment to service and her community will make her an excellent district attorney for the people of Lafayette County,” said Gov. Evers.

Johanning has been representing clients in criminal defense and family law cases since 2019, practicing in Lafayette, Green, Grant, and Iowa Counties. Her criminal defense work has ranged from traffic offenses to misdemeanors and serious felonies. Johanning is bilingual and has dedicated much of her practice to representing Spanish-speaking clients. Previously, she worked for Disability Rights Wisconsin, advocating for individuals who had been denied benefits.

“Morgan Johanning has proven her dedication to Lafayette County in her career and I have no doubt she will continue to benefit the community with her knowledge, fairness, and commitment to justice as the next district attorney,” said Lafayette County Circuit Court Judge Jenna Gill.

Johanning lives in Darlington and is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin–Platteville and the Northern Illinois University College of Law. In the community, she is the president of the Lafayette County Bar Association, an avid supporter of the local FFA chapters, and has volunteered with the Darlington Chamber of Commerce.

“I am humbled to accept the appointment of district attorney by Gov. Evers,” said Johanning. “My family and I have been in Lafayette County for seven generations and this will always be home to me. Being entrusted to help keep this county safe is an honor. I am grateful for the support of those in our legal community and beyond and I am eager to serve Lafayette County in this capacity. I look forward to continuing the legacy this office has of professionalism and the passionate pursuit of justice and fairness to all.”
