Gov. Evers Announces $20 Million in Healthcare Infrastructure Grants to Support Healthcare Access in Racine

RACINE — Gov. Tony Evers today announced $20 million from the Healthcare Infrastructure Capital Investment Grant Program will support the development of the new Racine Community Health Center to expand healthcare access in the Racine community for low-income families, underinsured or uninsured individuals, and historically underserved communities.

“I am excited to award the city of Racine $20 million to support their good work expanding vital healthcare services with this new community health center,” said Gov. Evers. “This facility will serve as a neighborhood medical center, connecting folks with care close to home and in their communities and ensuring that every family has access to quality, affordable care. This facility will break down barriers that so many underserved families and individuals face, and I want to thank the good folks in Racine for all their hard work to bring this project to life to build a healthier Wisconsin.”

The new Racine Community Health Center will serve as a neighborhood resource for gateway services, providing on-site assessment and primary care and utilizing case managers to coordinate referrals to specialty care, including mental and behavioral healthcare. Additionally, the clinic will operate under a sliding fee scale based on income, ensure transparency in their fee structure, and provide transportation and language assistance to remove any barriers to care.

Part of a more than $285 million investment allocated by the governor for community capital projects statewide, the Healthcare Infrastructure Capital Investment Grant Program was first announced in August 2021, alongside the Neighborhood Investment Fund Grant Program awarded last week. The city of Racine also received a $15 million grant through the Neighborhood Investment Fund Grant Program for the Lincoln-King Neighborhood Revitalization Plan which will provide new affordable housing in the community.

The Healthcare Infrastructure Capital Investment Grant Program is administered by the Wisconsin Department of Administration (DOA) and funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), with grants ranging in size from $158,000 to a maximum of $20 million. Applications opened on Oct. 26, 2021, and closed on Nov. 30, 2021. Recipients of the Healthcare Infrastructure Capital Investment Grant Program were announced Wednesday, and can be found on the program website.
