By - Apr 5th, 2021 07:22 pm

On Monday, April 5, at approximately 12:03 p.m., a 26-year-old male in custody at the Milwaukee County Jail was found unresponsive in his cell. Milwaukee County Sheriff’s correctional officers and medical personnel immediately began performing life-saving measures. Milwaukee Fire Department paramedics arrived shortly thereafter and continued performing life-saving measures. However, the man was pronounced deceased at 12:44 p.m.

The deceased, Anthony Walther of Milwaukee, was booked into custody on Tuesday, February 16, 2021. When he was found unresponsive in his individual cell during lunch service today, there were no apparent signs of self-harm. His body was transferred to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department has been requested to conduct an independent investigation into this incident, which is standard protocol for in-custody deaths at the Milwaukee County Jail.

Milwaukee County Sheriff Earnell R. Lucas issued the following statement regarding this incident: “The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office will cooperate fully with the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones.”
