Flutissimo! Carthage’s Wind Orchestra and Concert Band
KENOSHA, Wis. –
The final concert of the year for the Carthage Wind Orchestra and Concert Band will be given on Sunday May 3, 2026 in the A. F. Siebert Chapel. Highlighting the “front row” of the band, our program called Flutissimo includes selections performed exclusively by our flute section, pieces written to highlight the flute section, and flute soloist Amanda Nelson ’26 performing Mike Mower’s jazz-inspired Concerto for Flute and Wind Orchestra.
New works by student composers will be performed. Sophomore Hope Johnson’s Frontiers is a suite in four short movements describing a journey of realizing dreams through perseverance and shifting aims. John Cargille ‘26 has written a piece based on a painting “Eurydice Walks on Wounded Soles”, using a descriptive rhythmic figure to capture the dragging motion wounded feet.
Three student conductors will share the podium with Music Director James Ripley on the program. Jake Muller, a Junior from Pinegree Grove, Illinois will conduct Jules Massenet’s Meditation from “Thais”, Riley Gaylord, a junior from Antioch, Illinois will conduct Gordon Jacob’s Sweet Nightingale, and Drake Thomas, a junior from Frankfort Square, Illinois will lead the band on The Pennywhistle Song by Leroy Anderson. The Wind Orchestra will perform one of the most iconic flute features, The Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa as well as accompany Ms. Nelson’s performance of the Concerto for Flute, a recent “classic” of the flute repertoire written in 2004.
Other selections on the program will be for chamber winds: an arrangement of Haydn’s Toy Symphony for flute ensemble, Robert Spittal’s Consort for woodwind dectet, and a new work Mystical Meadows for woodwind quintet by Mikie Aylward ’29.
