Fire and Police Commission Policies and Standards Committee to Consider Policy Authorizing the Milwaukee Police Department to Tow Unregistered Vehicles Engaged in Reckless Driving

At a special meeting on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at 5:30 p.m., the Fire and Police Commission Policies and Standards Committee will consider an amendment to Milwaukee Police Department Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) 610 – Towing of Vehicles. This amendment would allow police officers to tow unregistered vehicles engaged in the following unsafe behaviors:

  1. Endangering safety by reckless driving
  2. Exceeding the posted speed limit by 25 MPH or more
  3. Fleeing from an officer
  4. Drag racing

At the February 16th meeting, the Policies and Standards Committee will discuss this proposed amendment and decide whether to refer the matter to the full FPC Board for final consideration at the Board’s next regular meeting on February 17, 2022 at 6:00 p.m.
