Downer Avenue to Host 43rd Annual Cycling Classic On Milwaukee City Streets June 24

Milwaukee, WI (June 1, 2023) – The Historic Downer Avenue Business Improvement District welcomes the 43rd year of the popular Downer Avenue bike races on Saturday June 24.

The Café Hollander Otto Wenz Downer Classic bike race presented by ISCorp is one of the most eagerly anticipated legs of the largest cycling event in the country, the Kwik Trip Tour of America’s Dairyland.

At the Downer Classic, which is Day 9 of the 11-day tour, 500 cyclists from around the country and world compete for prizes and primes, reaching speeds up to 35 mph. The races begin and end on N. Downer Avenue, with cyclists speeding on city streets and spectators watching from the sidewalks all along the several-block route. Tight turns and a big party at the finish makes the Downer Classic the perfect summer event for racers and spectators alike.

The series of races starts at 11:05 a.m., with the main competition beginning at 7:00 p.m.
For the first time, the Café Hollander Otto Wenz Downer Classic will include a one-mile running race – the Dairyland Mile, hosted by Infinity Running beginning at 6:00 p.m. During the Sendik’s Tween Kids Race (ages 10-12) and the Bel Air Little Kids Race (ages 2-9), riders can dress up their bikes at a decoration station sponsored by Lake Park Dental and Untethered (kids should bring their helmets). Culver’s and Corner Bakery will be rewarding the young participants with cookies and ice cream in front of Sendik’s.

Café Hollander will keep the momentum going with food and drinks all day on Hackett Avenue, with other Downer Avenue merchants offering food, drink and sale items as well. The Classic promises an electric energy that will be shared across all racing categories.

The Historic Downer Avenue Business Improvement District #41 will be partnering with the Kwik Trip Tour of America’s Dairyland to host and organize this annual event.
