Madison, WI – The Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR) is pleased to announce the launch of a new educational resource specifically geared toward first-time tax filers. The First-Time Filers web page is designed to take the guesswork out of tax season for students, recent graduates, independent contractors, and new Wisconsin residents.

Filing taxes for the first time can feel overwhelming, but DOR is committed to making the process transparent, secure, and easy to navigate. The new First-Time Filers web page provides a step-by-step roadmap to help Wisconsin taxpayers understand their obligations and maximize their potential refunds. The page contains informational resources like tax definitions, filing instructions, and videos that address common tax questions.

“We want our newest taxpayers to feel confident and empowered as they navigate the tax system,” said Secretary of Revenue David Casey. “By providing clear instructions, jargon-free resources, and highlighting free filing options like WisTax, we are ensuring that every Wisconsinite has the tools they need for a successful and positive filing experience.”

Key Features of the First-Time Filers Webpage:

  • Glossary of Terms: Plain-language definitions of common tax terms like “W-2s” and “Withholding.”
  • Video Library: A collection of short videos providing expert answers to popular tax questions.
  • Step-by-Step Filing Instructions: A breakdown of the tax filing process, from gathering documents to filing a federal and state return.
  • Filing Options: Information on how eligible taxpayers can file their state returns through WisTax, and links to free options for qualified individuals.

Taxpayers are encouraged to visit the First-Time Filers webpage to explore the tools available.

WisTax is Safe, Secure and Free

DOR reminds all taxpayers that filing electronically is the fastest and most secure way to process a return. First-time filers may be eligible to file their state tax returns for free using WisTax, DOR’s free, secure online system.
