Assembly Democrats support Governor Evers’ call for a special session on education

MADISON – Last week, Governor Evers called for a special session on public education that was slated to begin today at 1:00PM. Legislative Democrats support this plan that would help students. Assembly Democratic Leader Gordon Hintz (D-Oshkosh) released the following statement on the Republican refusal to take up these important bills:

“It is time to make our public schools a priority. After eight years of uncertain funding and devastating cuts to our K-12 schools, it’s refreshing to see Governor Evers focus on our students and educators,” Rep. Hintz stated. “The governor’s proposal makes critical investments in schools districts across the state while providing $130 million in property tax relief. This plan is a win-win for Wisconsin families.”

Governor Evers special session on education would:

·        Renew the state’s commitment to providing two-thirds funding for our public schools.

·        Expand mental health services for students who need them.

·        Ensure that students with disabilities are receiving the services and support they need to be successful.

·        Invest in rural schools through increased sparsity aid.

·        Help reduce property taxes through equalization aid.

“Republicans have rhetorically supported increased funding for school-based mental health care. Refusing to even take up the provision to increase mental health care funding proves that this was simply a talking point and not a priority for Republican legislators.”
