Death of a Person in Police Custody

MILWAUKEE, WI – On Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at approximately 1:55 a.m., Milwaukee Police Department officers conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle for a traffic violation on the 2200 block of W. Capitol Drive. A wanted check of the 20-year-old driver revealed he had a warrant, at which time he was arrested. He was transported to District 5, where he was booked in. Officers also recovered suspected illegal narcotics from the driver.

District 5 bookers conducted multiple cell checks, and at approximately 5:53 p.m., a District 5 booker observed the individual in need of medical attention. Officers provided life saving measures until they were relieved by the Milwaukee Fire Department. Ultimately, the individual was pronounced deceased.

According to department policy, a 32-year-old male officer with over four years of service, a 35-year-old male officer with over three years of service and a 48-year-old male officer with over 24 years of service have been placed on administrative duty.

Pursuant to the Milwaukee Police Department’s Standard Operating Procedure, a death of a person while in police custody will be investigated by an outside and independent law enforcement agency. The investigation is ongoing and being investigated by the Milwaukee Area Investigative Team. The Waukesha Police Department is the lead agency.
