MILWAUKEE—U.S. Army veteran, single mom, and experienced litigator Danielle Shelton announced today she will be a candidate for Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge in Branch 40 in the spring 2019 election. Shelton currently works as an assistant state public defender, previously was a civil attorney at Legal Action of Wisconsin, and spent many years working in the financial industry.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to be a strong, fair arbiter of justice on the Milwaukee County bench, and I look forward to earning the support of voters in the coming months,” said Shelton. “I’ve spent more than a decade in Milwaukee County courts and understand from long experience the challenges our community faces.”

Danielle grew up primarily on the North side of Milwaukee. She attended public schools, earned a bachelor’s degree from UW-Milwaukee, and received her law degree from Marquette University Law School. Danielle also served in the U.S. Army for six years, first as an enlisted PFC, and then becoming a commissioned officer through ROTC.

After college, Danielle earned her Series 7 and 63 licenses and worked in the financial industry for many years. Then she entered law school at Marquette University, where she worked in the Mediation Clinic with former Supreme Court Justice Janine Geske.

“I know from personal experience the difficulty of raising a family on one income,” said Shelton. “We have had our challenges but we’ve overcome them, and I’ve helped other families with their challenges. I’ll bring that understanding to the Milwaukee bench.”

After earning her J.D., Danielle moved to France with her two daughters for a year, where she worked to help immigrant women become situated in the community. Upon her return to the U.S., Danielle worked as a Senior Law attorney with Legal Action of Wisconsin. For more than a decade she’s worked as an Assistant State Public Defender, and has become a well-known, respected litigator.

Her daughters are now adults and hold degrees from Loyola University Chicago, Brown University, and Johns Hopkins University. Danielle continues to live in Shorewood, where her daughters attended public school.

The election for Branch 40 will be held April 2, 2019, with a primary election on February 19 if necessary.

  1. Gavin Eastsider says:

Ms Shelton would appear to have excellent life experiences and credentials to serve as Judge. I never heard her name before, to say nothing about knowing the particulars about her beyond what’s in this short bio, but so far so good as they say.

  2. Troll says:

    She appears electable.

  3. Thorin says:

She pops up on CCAP. And on the bankruptcy docket. Not in her lawyer mode in either. Very eratic in the courtroom. Been banned from courts for unlawyer like conduct. But will run a well funded campaign against a Walker appointee, unless Walker leaves the branch open for a year.

  4. citizensamsa says:

Danielle Shelton is a talented lawyer who has served with distinction. She has proved a tireless advocate for vulnerable people in the justice system for better than a decade. Ms. Shelton will make a strong candidate and a fair judge.
