Cudahy, Wisconsin – May 2026 – In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, the Cudahy Health Department, in collaboration with South Shore CARES, is proud to expand its Brew a Better Day initiative with a special community event, Coffee + Caring Conversations, taking place on Saturday, May 16, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Cudahy Family Library.

The Brew a Better Day initiative originally launched in August 2025 as an innovative community campaign designed to increase awareness of South Shore CARES CredibleMind, a free digital platform offering confidential, science-backed mental health and wellness tools, screenings, and self-guided resources. Through partnerships with local coffee shops, the campaign distributed branded coffee sleeves featuring QR codes linking directly to CredibleMind, along with South Shore CARES resource cards offering practical strategies for navigating stress, grief, anxiety, and other common life challenges.

This May, the initiative expands through a partnership with Sugar Leaf Coffee Roasterie, which has generously donated its exclusive Brew a Better Day coffee blend to support both community outreach and partner care kits being distributed to organizations serving individuals and families across Milwaukee County.

“As part of the South Shore community, we were proud to donate coffee to help fuel the Brew a Better Day initiative led by the Cudahy Health Department and South Shore CARES,” said Nolan Truttschel, Head Roaster at Sugar Leaf Coffee Roasterie. “The work our local health departments are doing to support mental health, build community, and connect people with resources is truly exceptional. We feel fortunate to be part of a community that values this kind of care and connection.”

As part of this effort, community members are invited to gather for Coffee + Caring Conversations, a free social event focused on connection, conversation, and emotional wellbeing. Attendees will enjoy complimentary coffee, light refreshments, and guided conversations inspired by South Shore CARES Caring Conversation Cards featuring uplifting prompts centered on topics such as gratitude, resilience, mindfulness, friendships, self-care, sleep, and happiness.

The event is designed to create a welcoming space where neighbors can connect, reduce stigma around mental health, and learn about free wellness resources available through South Shore CARES CredibleMind.

“This initiative is about creating simple, meaningful opportunities for people to connect with one another while normalizing conversations around mental health,” said Abbie Van Handel, Public Health Specialist with the Cudahy Health Department. “Something as simple as sharing a cup of coffee can open the door to connection, healing, and support.”

In addition to the community event, care kits containing Brew a Better Day coffee, South Shore CARES resource cards, and Caring Conversation Cards are being distributed to trusted community organizations that support individuals in recovery, mental health services, and basic needs assistance throughout the region.

The Brew a Better Day initiative aims to:

  • Encourage open conversations about mental health
  • Reduce stigma associated with seeking support
  • Increase awareness and utilization of South Shore CARES CredibleMind
  • Strengthen community connection and resilience

Community members of all ages are welcome to attend. No registration is required.
