Council greenlights major expansion for 5xen Super Asian Market
Today the Common Council approved a zoning change that will allow a $20 million expansion and renovation of the 5xen Super Asian Market, 6300 N. 76th St., to go forward.
Alderman Cavalier Johnson, whose 2nd Aldermanic District includes the busy northwest side market location, said the Council’s approval of an ordinance changing the zoning from Industrial Light, IL1, to Detailed Planned Development, DPD, allows the expansion project to begin in early 2021, with completion expected in July 2021.
This zoning change – recommended for approval earlier this year by the City Plan Commission – was requested by 5XEN, Inc. and will allow the property located at 6270 N. 76th St. to be combined with 6300 N. 76th St. to execute the expansion of the existing market.
The 5xen Super Asian Market plans to add a three-story, 35,000-square-foot addition, and the main floor will have space for two additional commercial kitchens serving food for carryout or for dining at the market’s common area seating. The market has eight commercial kitchens, as well as 24 retailers that sell clothes and other items.
The project will also include improved “event and meeting space” on the market’s second floor for weddings, parties and other events.
Additionally, a supermarket that carries Asian foods and general grocery items will be added at the location.
