Council committee appointment file would give members at least two assignments

By - May 3rd, 2024 03:42 pm

The Steering and Rules Committee on Monday (May 6) will take up proposed legislation requiring that each member of the Common Council be assigned to serve on at least two standing committees.

Council file #240024 – sponsored by Alderwoman Andrea M. Pratt – seeks to amend the Common Council’s Procedure and Rules relating to Standing Committee assignments. The Common Council President appoints Common Council members to standing committees, including the designation of chairs and vice-chairs. The file proposes amending the rules to require that each member of the Common Council be assigned to at least two standing committees unless disciplinary or legal issues prevent that assignment (or in the event that a Council member asks to be appointed to fewer than two committees, and the Council President grants that ask).

Monday’s committee meeting will start at 1:30 p.m. in room 301-B at City Hall, 200 E. Wells St., and will be televised live on the City Channel (channel 25 on Spectrum Cable and channel 99 on AT&T U-Verse in the City of Milwaukee) and via streaming video on the city website at www.city.milwaukee.gov/Channel25.
